To transplant early or treat first?: A dilemma for Hepatitis C positive recipients

Kidney transplantation is a life-saving procedure for patients with end-stage kidney disease (ESKD)1. Despite the realisation that transplantation is clinically and economically superior to dialysis2, not all patients with ESKD will receive a transplant during their lifetime. Worldwide, the number of patients able to benefit from kidney transplantation is restricted by the shortage of deceased donor kidneys. In the United States (US), approximately 10% of those on dialysis (approximately 110,000 patients) are listed on the deceased donor transplant waiting list, and approximately 5000 patients die each year (around 4.5%) while waiting for a kidney transplant.
