The Endoscopic Hepatologist: Not an Oxymoron

Endoscopists have long had an impact in the management of pancreatobiliary disease and esophageal and gastric varices secondary to cirrhosis, but the use of endoscopic methods in diagnosis and management of primary liver disease has been modest to nil. This is changing. With the use of new instruments and techniques, mostly based on progress in endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography and more importantly in endoscopic ultrasonography (EUS), advanced endoscopists have recently shown the capability to carry out procedures that have the potential to compete successfully with interventional radiologists.
