Injuries to Amateur Participants in Traditional Bullfighting Festivals

ConclusionsInjuries occurring during traditional bull-related festivals are different in patients with open wounds from patients who suffer blunt trauma. The pathogenesis of these injuries must be understood in order to improve patient survival.

We describe a case of a 76-year-old Caucasian male who presented to the Emergency Department (ED) with weight loss, abdominal pain, and multiple episodes of vomiting and diarrhea. He underwent a laparotomy with an intraluminal mass seen in the cecum. Histology showed atypical intermediate- to large-sized cells involving the full thickness of the bowel wall with numerous mitotic figures and apoptotic bodies. The adjacent uninvolved mucosa demonstrated villous blunting, increased intraepithelial lymphocytes, crypt elongation, and lamina propria plasmacytosis, consistent with the celiac enteropathy. Rare large transformed cel...

ConclusionMesenteric cysts represent a rare cause of intra-abdominal mass. Owing to low prevalence, literature is limited as is guidance on management. Careful pre-operative planning is essential so as to avoid operative complications. Imaging such as USS is of great importance; however Computed Tomography (CT) and Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) may be of more benefit, owing to the complex anatomical relations within which mesenteric cysts can present. Surgical excision is widely reported as the surgical treatment of choice for symptomatic cysts

ConclusionThe RMCs are rare benign lesions that tend to reoccur if total surgical resection isn’t made, when the total resection couldn’t be achieved the unspecific anti-mitotic drugs may help to minimize the recurrence and improve the life quality of the patient.

Authors: Fukuda M, Miyake T, Matsubara A, Ikai N, Tanaka E, Namura T, Wada Y, Noujima M, Moritani S, Murakami K, Andoh A, Tani M, Kushima R Abstract A 72-year-old man was followed as an outpatient at our hospital for 6 years after surgery for small cell carcinoma of left adrenal gland origin. Follow-up abdominal computed tomography showed a 6-cm mass in the left lower mesentery. The patient underwent open laparotomy. The histological diagnosis was sclerosing mesenteritis. The previous specimens of the left adrenal mass were then re-examined with a microscope, and panniculitis was found around the small cell carcino...

ConclusionWe demonstrated that laparoscopic gastrostomy with fully extracorporeal suturing within the trocar site is feasible and beneficial, especially for the most neurologically impaired pediatric cases. Technical modification, changing the order of the process, and suturing technique in the minimal space, made it easier to perform the procedures inside the minimal trocar hole.

ConclusionSurgical RCTs have always been difficult to undertake, yet there are 16 RCTs in the area of endometriosis-associated pain. Ethical considerations, the equipoise of surgeons and participants and follow-up duration are all important parameters in establishing RCTs. We must also be willing to accept and adopt the evidence when it does demonstrate a particular outcome – such as the fact that surgical uterosacral nerve disruption does not improve pain, or that disc excision does not substantially reduce complications compared to segmental resection for bowel disease as prior non-randomized studies suggested. If ...

Eur J Pediatr Surg DOI: 10.1055/s-0039-1700550 Introduction Bone morphogenetic proteins (BMPs) are a family of proteins that regulate proliferation and differentiation of intestinal epithelial cells. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the role of BMP signaling following intestinal ischemia–reperfusion (IR) in a rat model. Materials and Methods Male Sprague-Dawley rats were divided into four experimental groups: Sham-24 and Sham-48 rats underwent laparotomy and were sacrificed 24 or 48 hours later, respectively; IR-24 and IR-48 rats underwent occlusion of superior mesenteric artery and po...

Abstract BACKGROUND: To investigate the incidence of surgical intervention in very low birth weight (VLBW) infants and the impact of surgery on neurodevelopmental outcomes at corrected ages (CAs) of 18-24 months, using data from the Korean Neonatal Network (KNN). METHODS: Data from 7,885 VLBW infants who were born and registered with the KNN between 2013 to 2016 were analyzed in this study. The incidences of various surgical interventions and related morbidities were analyzed. Long-term neurodevelopmental outcomes at CAs of 18-24 months were compared between infants (born during 2013 to 2015, n = 3,777) with ...
