The Obscure Role of Genetics on Weight-Loss Following Bariatric Surgery
Obesity is a multifactorial complex disease. Thus, despite the new evidence that genetics influences obesity, it is necessary to consider that biological and psychosocial factors interact in a complex way. Combination with environmental influences, genes are up to 70% responsible for body's weight [1]. Many of the selected genes play critical roles in either the metabolic or neuropsychiatric pathways contributing to obesity. Genetics play an obscure role in both obesity [2] and weight-loss outcomes after surgery [3].
