When modesty goes too far: The Mediational role of positive dampening on depression

In emotion regulation research, responses to positive affect are as important as responses to negative affect. Individuals with or at risk for bipolar disorder may dampen positive affect in order to avoid succumbing to positive affect that is too extreme or to enforce the cognition that positive moods are not deserved (Parrott, 1998). This may allow them to maintain a depressogenic perspective of their world. Several studies have shown that depression is related to decreased responsivity to positive stimuli (Sloan, et al., 2002).
