Separation from parents during childhood and risk of schizophrenia and bipolar disorder: A population-based study in Denmark

Background: There is a growing body of research documenting associations between childhood parental loss, including parental separation and death, and psychotic disorders in adulthood. However, studies specifically investigating parental separation have yielded mixed results, and few have examined factors that might modify these associations. Our objective was to characterize associations of childhood parental separation with schizophrenia and bipolar disorder with respect to age, duration, and parental mental health.
