Influence of Itch and Pain on Sleep Quality in Atopic Dermatitis and Psoriasis.

This study assessed the impact of itch and pain on sleep quality among 100 patients with atopic dermatitis and 100 patients with psoriasis, compared with 50 controls. The Athens Insomnia Scale (AIS) and Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) were used to evaluate a spectrum of sleep disturbances. Co-existence of insomnia was indicated in the majority of patients; atopic dermatitis (82%), psoriasis (62%). PSQI total scores for patients with atopic dermatitis (8.3 ± 4.2 points) and those with psoriasis (8.1 ± 4.8 points) qualified them, in 80% of cases, as poor sleepers and were significantly higher compared with controls (3.1 ± 1.9 points). However, subjects with atopic dermatitis experienced more problems with insomnia and sleep quality than did those with psoriasis. Atopic dermatitis and psoriasis-related itch, but not pain, has a substantial association with insomnia and sleep quality in these patients, and is a crucial subjective symptom in these chronic, inflammatory skin diseases. Authors: Fan M, Chen Z Abstract The purpose of the present review was to evaluate the available evidence on the efficacy of various non-pharmacological interventions to relieve pain after orthopedic surgical procedures. An electronic search of the PubMed, Embase and Cochrane library databases was performed to retrieve studies of all types assessing the role of non-pharmacological interventions for pain relief after orthopedic surgical procedures. The included studies were required to assess pain outcomes using a validated measurement index, such as the Visual Analog Scale. The quality of randomized control trials (...

In this study, cases submitted with a serologically confirmed, clinically unequivocal, or highly suspicious diagnosis of ECM/Lyme disease between January 01, 2016, and September 01, 2018, were retrieved from the electronic database system and reviewed to delineate the histopathologic features of ECM. The series consisted of 14 cases. A superficial perivascular lymphocytic infiltrate was noted in all biopsies, accompanied by a deep and/or interstitial inflammatory infiltrate in 9 cases (64%). The inflammation ranged from relatively sparse to dense and prominent. At least focal interface changes were noted in 12 biopsies (86...

ConclusionsThe present study revealed that there were no significant differences in clinical or radiological outcomes between computer-navigated TKA and conventional TKA. It remains unclear which TKA technique yields better results in terms of mid- to long-term clinical and radiological outcomes.Level of evidenceI.

Purpose: To identify the association between sleep apnea (SA) and central serous chorioretinopathy (CSC). Methods: In this nationwide population-based study using the Taiwan National Health Insurance Database, we enrolled adult patients with a diagnosis of SA and matched each patient to 30 age- and gender-matched control subjects without any SA diagnosis. Using Poisson regression analyses, the incidence rate of CSC was compared between SA patients and control subjects. Results: A total of 10,753 SA patients and 322,590 control subjects were identified. After adjusting for age, gender, residency, income level, and c...

Although many effective gout therapies are available for acute flares and chronic management, it is suboptimally treated worldwide, and recurrent gout flares can cause significant pain and irreversible joint damage.
