2.3 Evidence-Based Identification of Depression

Depression is relatively common among youth and is associated with impairment and negative outcomes, including suicide. In spite of its prevalence and consequences, depression in youth often goes undiagnosed according to the US Preventive Services Task Force. Numerous factors can interfere with accurate diagnosis: symptoms may be misattributed to other disorders or “normal” behavior; a change in functioning may not seem to warrant professional help; or comorbid conditions may obscure a depressive disorder.
