Synovial Osteochondromatosis of the Temporomandibular Joint Presenting 208 Loose Bodies: Immunohistochemical Analysis

Synovial osteochondromatosis (SO) of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) is a rare benign disorder characterized by the development of multiple osteocartilaginous nodules in the synovial membrane, which subsequently detach, turning into loose bodies. A 48-year-old man sought dental care for pain and swelling affecting the left TMJ. The clinical features and imaging findings suggested a diagnosis of SO. After surgical procedures, macroscopically, 208 loose bodies were observed, ranging from 1.7 to 7.5  cm in diameter; on microscopy, they appeared as circumscribed osteocartilaginous nodules, partly ossified, consistent with the diagnosis of SO.
