How accurate is pre-operative imaging in diagnosing acute appendicitis?

Aim: Right iliac fossa pain is a common surgical presentation, yet the clinical diagnosis of appendicitis is challenging, particularly in children, young women and the elderly. In an attempt to minimise the negative appendicectomy rate, pre-operative imaging is often utilised. Aim to establish the accuracy of pre-operative ultrasonography (USS) and computed tomography (CT) scanning in the diagnosis of acute appendicitis.
