Hari Krishnan, Rahool S., Anubhav Agrawal, Anurag Kawale, Sarang KanadeAbstractPurposeTo compare and study the short-term clinical outcome in patients with or without a drain usage in primary total knee arthroplasty (TKA).MethodsA prospective cohort study in a consecutive series of 61 women and 39 men (mean age, 66 years) with primary osteoarthritis underwent unilateral TKA. In the first 50 patients a low suction pressure drain was used for six hours, and in the next 50 patients no drain was used following TKA.ResultsThe 2 groups were comparable in terms of preoperative characteristics, age group, the proportion of patients with pharmacological prophylaxis for deep vein thrombosis, usage of anti fibrinolytics before surgery, the tourniquet time, mode of anaesthesia, operative approach and steps and type of implant used. The mean drain output in the drain group was 92 ml. The time to achieve straight-leg raising was earlier in the drain group (2.1 vs. 3.2 days, p

Abstract Background: Arthritis can have profound debilitating effects on the hand secondary to finger deformities and pain. Arthroplasty of the metacarpophalangeal (MCP) and proximal interphalangeal (PIP) can be performed to reduce pain while maintaining joint range of motion. Methods: We used outpatient surgery registries from the states of California and Florida to assess the trends of arthroplasty across several recent years and to determine if the outcomes differ based on disease etiology. Results: We found that there has been a steady decline in number of MCP arthroplasty procedures performed annually between...

Synovitis is an early set and persistent change during the progression of osteoarthritis, which causes symptoms such as pain and swelling of the joints. Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) can release quantities of growth factors and cytokines, and is proved effected in promoting restoration of multiple soft tissues.

Background: Total hip arthroplasty (THA) relieves pain and restores function in patients with severe rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis. Over the past few decades, several authors have attempted to assess the efficacy and safety of simultaneous bilateral THA compared with staged bilateral THA. The purpose of this meta-analysis is to compare the mortalities and complications between simultaneous bilateral THA and staged bilateral THA. Methods: A literature search to identify eligible studies was undertaken to identify all relevant articles published until August 2018. We included studies that compared simultaneous...

This study sought to investigate what could be learned from how these men have fared. The men were born in 1925-1928 and similar health-related data from questionnaires, physical examination, and blood samples are available for all surveys. Survival curves over various variable strata were applied to evaluate the impact of individual risk factors and combinations of risk factors on all-cause deaths. At the end of 2018, 118 (16.0%) of the men had reached 90 years of age. Smoking in 1974 was the strongest single risk factor associated with survival, with observed percentages of men reaching 90 years being 26.3, 25.7, ...

In this study, we found that senescent chondrocytes isolated from OA patients secrete more EVs compared with nonsenescent chondrocytes. These EVs inhibit cartilage ECM deposition by healthy chondrocytes and can induce a senescent state in nearby cells. We profiled the miR and protein content of EVs isolated from the synovial fluid of OA joints from mice with SnCs. After treatment with a molecule to remove SnCs, termed a senolytic, the composition of EV-associated miR and protein was markedly altered. The senolytic reduced OA development and enhanced chondrogenesis, and these were attributable to several specific differenti...

ConclusionsThe outcome of TKA in non-morbidly obese patients is comparable to non-obese patients with excellent post-operative objective and functional scores. The benefits are sustainable over a long duration of time. The complication rates in obese patients is no different than non-obese patients.

Osteoarthritis (OA) is the third most common diagnosis made by general practitioners in older patients. The purpose of the current study is to investigate effects rivaroxaban had on both hidden blood loss and blood transfusion rate (BTR) in patients with knee OA (KOA) after going through a total knee replacement (TKR). Between the time periods of December 2011 up until January 2015, a total of 235 patients underwent TKR and were selected to be assigned to either the rivaroxaban or nonanticoagulant groups. Coagulation function indexes before surgery and following administration of rivaroxaban, total blood loss, hidden bloo...

In this study, researchers put some numbers to the correlation, and improve on previous attempts to rule out wealth and other effects as significant contributing causes. A study finds that a Chinese policy is unintentionally causing people in northern China to live 3.1 years less than people in the south, due to air pollution concentrations that are 46 percent higher. These findings imply that every additional 10 micrograms per cubic meter of particulate matter pollution reduces life expectancy by 0.6 years. The elevated mortality is entirely due to an increase in cardiorespiratory deaths, indicating that air poll...

e; PE Abstract BACKGROUND: Hip arthroscopy has evolved into a well-established and rapidly growing field of orthopedic surgery for the management of labral tears. The purpose of this study was to review clinical outcomes of patients less than 25 years of age undergoing hip arthroscopy for treatment of a labral tear. METHODS: From 2005 to 2013, 82 hips in 76 patients with mean age of 20.4 (16-25 range) underwent hip arthroscopy for treatment of labral-chondral damage. The Western Ontario McMaster Universities Osteoarthritis Index (WOMAC) and hip disability and osteoarthritis outcome score (HOOS) were recorded ...
