A nationwide population-based cohort study of dementia risk among acid suppressant users

Acid suppressants such as proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) and histamine-2 receptor antagonists (H2RAs) are the primary drugs of choice for treating many acid-related gastrointestinal diseases, including gastroesophageal reflux disease and peptic ulcer.1 Extended indications, such as prophylactic use against non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs and treatment of functional dyspepsia, have led to increased use of acid suppressants, especially in the elderly.2 Healthcare providers often prescribe these drugs for prolonged periods, even in the absence of appropriate indications.
