An Unusual Morphological Presentation of Cutaneous Squamous Cell Carcinoma Mimicking Microcystic Adnexal Carcinoma: A Diagnostic Pitfall
Cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) exhibiting microcystic adnexal carcinoma-like differentiation is an extremely rare tumor that shows both squamous and ductal differentiation. This tumor is often misdiagnosed clinically and histologically and is confused with other malignant and benign cutaneous neoplasms. It usually occurs in middle-aged to older adults. Here, we report a case of SCC with microcystic adnexal carcinoma-like differentiation on the left chin of a 71-year-old male. The histopathological examination revealed a nodular tumor infiltrating the dermis, subcutaneous fat, and striated muscle tissue, consisting of both prominent atypical squamous differentiation and foci of duct-like structures.Dermatopathology 2018;5:64 –68
Authors: Peng C, Cohen DJ Abstract INTRODUCTION: Esophageal squamous cancer remains an important cause of mortality worldwide with two new immunotherapy drugs recently approved for metastatic disease. AREAS COVERED: The authors review the epidemiology and genomics of esophageal squamous cell carcinoma. They also examine prior trials involving targeted agents under investigation as well immunotherapies that have been approved and novel combinations. EXPERT OPINION: Great advances have been made in characterizing the molecular changes in esophageal carcinoma. However, relatively few drugs have shown benefit i...
ConclusionsThe expression level of MALAT1 is closely related with progression of tongue SCC. Furthermore, MALAT1 can serve as an independent biomarker for prognostic evaluation of tongue SCC.
Authors: Takahashi M, Horio Y, Takihara T, Enokida K, Miyaoka M, Hirabayashi K, Ohshinden K, Hattori S, Takahashi F, Takahashi G, Tanaka J, Takiguchi H, Niimi K, Ito Y, Hayama N, Oguma T, Asano K Abstract A 72-year-old man was treated with prednisolone and cyclosporine A for idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis. A nodule with a diameter of 19 mm was found in the right lung and diagnosed as lung squamous cell carcinoma. Anti-cancer treatments were not performed because of the presence of advanced interstitial pneumonia and chronic respiratory failure. Cyclosporine A was tapered to avoid suppression of anti-tumor immunity, ...
Conclusion: Our findings provide new insights into the role of glycolysis in HNSCC. The identified genes predict the patient prognosis and might substantially contribute to the development of individualized treatments. PMID: 33029143 [PubMed]

moto Approximately 604,000 new cases of esophageal cancers (EC) are expected to be diagnosed in 2020, resulting in 537,000 cancer deaths worldwide. (...)
This study focused on the expression of mitochondrial serine hydroxymethyltransferase (SHMT2) in oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) and its correlation with clinical traits and the prognosis of OSCC patients. Immunochemical staining and Western blotting were used to quantify the expression of SHMT2 and related immune markers in OSCC. Using OSCC microarrays and The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) database, we evaluated the association between SHMT2 and various clinical traits. We found that increased expression of SHMT2 was detected in OSCC and correlated with advanced pathological grade and recurrence of OSCC. By a multivariat...
We describe an unusual telangiectatic variant of squamous cell carcinoma in a 53 yr old woman. The tumor showed the usual morphologic features of a poorly differentiated keratinizing squamous cell carcinoma with>75% tumor area showing cavernous hemangioma like ectatic spaces filled with blood. The blood-filled spaces lacked an endothelial lining as evidenced by negativity for CD31 and CD34. This unusual variant has not been reported previously. Awareness of this entity is necessary for avoiding confusion with vascular tumors such as hemangiomas and angiosarcoma.
