Emotion introspection and regulation in depression

Being aware of and voluntarily controlling and guiding one's own mental states are highly evolved human capabilities (Heatherton,  2011). These abilities, however, may be impaired in mental disorders such as depression. Depression is characterized by difficulties in controlling unpleasant emotions and thoughts (DeRubeis et al., 2008; Disner et al., 2011). Neural models of impaired emotional processing in depression implicat e amygdala hyperactivity and impaired emotion regulation related to dysfunction of the medial and dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (MPFC, DLPFC (DeRubeis et al., 2008; Disner et al., 2011; Holmes et al., 2014; Keshavan et al., 2014).
