Left atrial appendage ligation and atrial fibrillation: A tool to “snare” greater success?

In 1998, Ha ïssaguerre et al1 published a seminal observational study describing pulmonary vein ectopic beats triggering atrial fibrillation. This landmark article ushered in a new era in the management of atrial fibrillation, and pulmonary vein isolation (PVI) rapidly became the basis for catheter ablation t herapy.2 Indeed, within the decade, catheter ablation for atrial fibrillation would become the single most common invasive procedure at many large medical centers managing cardiac arrhythmias in high-income nations.
