Medical Malpractice Litigation Associated with Anesthesia in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery
The operator-anesthetist model used by oral and maxillofacial surgeons (OMSs) in the office-based outpatient setting is challenged as “unsafe.”1 The American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons (AAOMS) is undertaking efforts to demonstrate safety of the operator-anesthetist team model and enhance the quality, safety, and training of anesthesia management within the specialty. There is little literature published on oral and maxillofacial surgery-related anesthesia malpractice. The studies that do exist are not comprehensive and rely on media reports.
