Would I do it again? Reflections on a career in academia and electrophysiology
For a young person contemplating the electrophysiology scene in 1960 ’s New York, the vistas were unlimited. The City was home to three giants: Brian Hoffman at Columbia, Tony Damato at the Public Health Service Hospital, and Paul Cranefield at the Rockefeller; and the Downstate Medical Center, whose Department of Physiology had spawned the careers of Hoffman, Cran efield, Vassalle and many others, remained a force. Also evident was the influence of David Scherf, who – having emigrated from Vienna to New York - was a regular attendee at local electrophysiology meetings, reverentially deferred to by all.
