Current status of gastroesophageal reflux disease : diagnosis and treatment.

CONCLUSION: The management of this disease requires a complex approach. Maintenance therapy of GERD after using anti-secretory drugs should be continuously monitored. PMID: 29560670 [PubMed - in process]

Authors: Jang SB, Kim SE, Kim YA, Choi HR Abstract Extramammary Paget disease (EMPD) is an uncommon malignancy that occurs in apocrine gland-rich areas of the body. EMPD of the axilla is rare, but a few cases have been reported. Some cases of EMPD have been reported with underlying apocrine adenocarcinoma; rarely, mammary-type ductal carcinoma can accompany EMPD. Here, we report a very rare case of EMPD with apocrine adenocarcinoma and invasive mammary-type ductal carcinoma. A 55-year-old woman was referred with a brownish pigmented plaque accompanying an area of ulceration in the left axilla. A preoperative biopsy...

We examined the prognostic differences in 527 patients with MPC according to the diagnosis time. In 325 patients of long-term survivors in whom MPC was diagnosed ≥ 5 years postoperative, 5-year survival rate and the median survival time after diagnosis were 35.1% and 17.7 months, respectively. This outcome was significantly poorer than that of 160 patients in whom MPC was diagnosed within 5 years postoperative (58.5% and 62.7 months, P

Graft-versus-host disease (GVHD) is a major complicating factor in determining morbidity and mortality following allogeneic stem cell transplant. To prevent GVHD, our institution administers calcineurin inhibitors and low doses of methotrexate (MTX) (5-15 mg/m2) on days +1, +3, +6, +11 for GVHD prophylaxis.Proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) are used for the treatment of gastroesophageal reflux disease, pyrosis, and/or peptic ulcer disease. PPIs have been shown to inhibit the ATP-binding cassette drug transporter Breast Cancer Resistance Protein's (BCRP/ABCG2) ability to excrete methotrexate into the urine in a concentration-dependent manner.

Ubiquitin-specific protease 9X (USP9X) has been shown to be associated with resistance to chemotherapy drugs in several cancers. The purpose of this study was to explore the predictive effects of USP9X on advanced ESCC patients treated with cisplatin-based regi...

Authors: Yu Z, Yang J, Gao L, Huang Q, Zi H, Li X Abstract BACKGROUND Competing risk analysis determines the probability of survival and considers competing events. This retrospective study aimed to undertake a competing risk analysis of prognosis in patients with esophageal carcinoma between 2006-2015 using data from the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) database. MATERIAL AND METHODS Clinicopathological, demographic, and survival data were analyzed for patients with esophageal carcinoma registered in the SEER database between 2006-2015. The competing risk model calculated the cumulative incidence...

Authors: Lai G, Guo N, Jiang Y, Lai J, Li Y, Lai R Abstract OBJECTIVE: To assess whether the duration of one-lung ventilation (OLV) affects postoperative pulmonary complications after McKeown esophagectomy for esophageal cancer. METHODS: A retrospective analysis of data stored in a database for esophageal cancer was carried out to identify predictors of postoperative pulmonary complications in patients undergoing McKeown esophagectomy at Sun Yat-sen University Cancer Center between 2010 and 2012. RESULTS: Patients in the OLV ⩾150 minutes group had a higher incidence of postoperative pulmonary complication...

Authors: Li K, Yang J, Chen J, Shi Y, Zhang Z, Chen W Abstract The present study investigated if c-MYC and high mobility group AT-hook 2 (HMGA2) expression was associated with prognosis of patients with pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC). A total of 102 patients undergoing surgery for PDAC were retrospectively reviewed. Immunohistochemistry was used to detect c-MYC and HMGA2 protein expression in PDAC and peritumoral tissue samples. Expression of c-MYC and HMGA2 was associated with clinicopathological characteristics and prognoses of patients with PDAC using multivariate analysis. HMGA2 and c-MYC protein expre...

Authors: Banias L, Jung I, Bara T, Fulop Z, Simu P, Simu I, Satala C, Gurzu S Abstract The aim of the present study was to classify colorectal carcinoma (CRC) into molecular subtypes, based on immunohistochemical (IHC) assessments. A total of 112 CRC samples were molecularly classified based on the expression levels of epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT)-associated IHC markers. A total of three molecular subtypes were defined: Epithelial, membrane positivity for E-cadherin and β-catenin, negative for vimentin; mesenchymal, E-cadherin-negative, nuclear β-catenin- and vimentin-positive; and hybrid cases...

Authors: Lan T, Xiao Z, Luo H, Su K, Yang O, Zhan C, Lu Y Abstract Esophageal cancer (ESCA) carries a poor prognosis among gastrointestinal malignancies. The present study developed a signature based on mRNAs and long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) to predict prognosis in ESCA by using The Cancer Genome Atlas database. By using least absolute shrinkage and selection operator penalized regression, a set of RNAs (three mRNAs and two lncRNAs) was identified and used to build a risk score system of ESCA prognosis, which was used to stratify patients having considerable diverse survival in the training set [hazard ratio (HR)...
