Emotional Speech Processing Deficits in Bipolar Disorder: The Role of Mismatch Negativity and P3a

Bipolar disorder (BD) is a chronic mental illness characterized by the cycling of severe dysfunctional mood states (Culpepper et al., 2014), ranging from marked periods of extreme elevation and mania (BD type I) or hypo-mania (BD type II); to severe depression; and symptom-free periods of euthymia (American Psychiatric Association, 2013). BD is also associated with impaired psychosocial functioning (Brissos et al., 2008a, 2008b; Martinez ‐Aran et al., 2007), particularly within the interpersonal domain (Simonsen et al., 2010; Van Rheenen and Rossell, 2014).
