Administrative Data for Research: An Increasingly Powerful Tool, but Still With Caveats
Recent decades have seen an explosion of administrative and clinical databases. Most developed countries now maintain a variety of aging and long-term care-related data sets at the national level; in the United States they include the Minimum Data Set (MDS) for Nursing Home Resident Assessment database,1 the Outcome Assessment and Information Set (OASIS) for home health patients,2 a variety of Medicare databases,3 the Online Survey, Certification and Reporting (OSCAR) database,4 and surveys such as the National Study of Long-Term Care Providers.
