Restless leg syndrome in patients with chronic kidney disease on hemodialysis – does peripheral iron status matter?

Introduction: Restless leg syndrome (RLS) is a sensorimotor condition with symptoms comprising of an urge to move the legs which is usually but not always accompanied by uncomfortable and unpleasant sensations in the legs. The restlessness occurs or worsens at rest, in the evening or night than during the day and is relieved by activity. Sleep disorders such as sleep apnea, restless legs syndrome and periodic limb movement are frequent in chronic kidney disease (CKD). Among them, restless legs syndrome may affect up to 4.5% of patients not on dialysis and 20.3% in patients on hemodialysis.
