Prevalence and Predictors of Depression, Pain, and Fatigue in Older ‐ versus Younger‐Adult Cancer Survivors
ConclusionThere were no observed differences in depression between older and younger adult cancer survivors. Gender and ethnic discrepancies in depression were observed. Future research should focus on understanding the nature of these differences and targeting interventions for the groups most vulnerable to depression after cancer treatment.
By Sandee LaMotte, CNN (CNN) — Here’s another reason why getting a good night’s sleep should be on your must-do list: Sleeping fewer than six hours a night or waking frequently raises your risk of developing damaging plaque in arteries throughout your body, not just your heart. Previous research has shown poor sleep to be strongly associated with coronary heart disease, but “This is the first study to show that objectively measured sleep is independently associated with atherosclerosis throughout the body,” José Ordovás, director of nutrition and genomics at the Jean Mayer USDA H...
Conclusions: Persistent fatigue at 1 year after EBRT in prostate cancer survivors is likely related to a cluster of symptoms elicited by chronic inflammation. Therapies that target each of these symptoms will likely reduce fatigue in this patient population.Oncology
ConclusionsMany patients with MDS, AA, and PNH report severe fatigue. The helpfulness of fatigue management strategies may impact patients ’ continued use; whether these strategies are beneficial and decrease fatigue levels needs more study.
Conclusions: Although the primary outcome was not met, this trial indicates that EPC may improve early pain relief in patients with advanced pancreatobiliary cancers.
In a blog post last week, I shared an excerpt from the new book that Paul Cerrato and I just completed,The Transformative Power of Mobile Medicine. Here is a second excerpt from Chapter 3, “Exploring the Strengths and Weaknesses of Mobile Health Apps.”Even patients who are fully engaged in their own care still need access to medical apps they can trust. The IQVIA Institute for Human Data Science has performed a detailed analysis of the clinical evidence supporting mobile health apps, rating their maturity and relative quality. Its rating scale places a single observational study near the bottom of th...
ConclusionThe findings of this study underscore the need to improve patient-physician communication during chemotherapy to reduce the symptom burden among Hispanic breast cancer patients.
ConclusionsThis review provides comprehensive evidence of genetic polymorphisms underlying PN symptoms, which may pave the way for the development of personalized therapeutics targeting these symptoms. More well-designed genome-wide association studies are required to validate and replicate these findings.
Conclusions: Results suggest that most facets of mindfulness may optimize psychological functioning following HSCT, and the ability to describe one's internal experience and to focus on the present moment may have a beneficial influence on physical functioning. Discussions regarding palliative care and end‐of‐life care issues are frequently delayed past the time of usefulness, resulting in unwanted medical care. We sought to develop a patient‐reported outcome (PRO) instrument that allows patients to voice their symptom burdens and facilitate timing of discussions.Subjects, Materials, and Methods.A seven‐item PRO instrument (Cota Patient Assessed Symptom Score‐7 item [CPASS‐7]) covering physical performance status, pain, burden, and depression was administered (September 2015 through October 2016) with correlation to overall survival, correcting for time to complete su...
