Increased prevalence of asthma and respiratory symptoms 2008-2016 in West Sweden despite a major decrease in smoking

Conclusion An increased prevalence of current asthma and an increased prevalence of respiratory symptoms was seen over 8 years, despite a dramatic decrease in tobacco smoking. The increase in the young may be explained by increased prevalence of allergy, since allergic rhinitis has increased. Overall, our data indicates that other factors contributing to respiratory problems, beyond smoking, explain the increase in respiratory symptoms.
