[Editorial] Pledge deaths in US colleges

The suspected alcohol-related death of 20-year-old Texas University fraternity pledge Matthew Ellis last week has put US college “Greek week” activities in 2017 firmly in the global spotlight. Texas joins Ohio, Louisiana, Pennsylvannia, and Florida state universities in suspending fraternity and sorority activities either in response to student deaths or reports of hazing—legally defined as the abuse a student must endu re to gain admittance to an organisation. It includes both physical harm (including forcing dangerous amounts of alcohol to be drunk) and the mental harm of forcing a student to behave in a humiliating way.
