Gender and the Association between Long-Term Prescription Opioid Use and New-Onset Depression

The evidence for greater pain sensitivity in women compared with men is well documented. In private sector as well as in Veterans Health Administration (VHA) patient populations, women are more likely to report current pain, have a higher prevalence of noncancer pain conditions, report more severe pain associated with these conditions, and are more likely to have persistent pain.2,13,18,44 Yet, this literature is mixed because others have reported female veterans are more likely to report moderate to severe pain but not persistent pain.
