Science and Engineering Publication Output Trends: 2014 Shows Rise of Developing Country Output while Developed Countries Dominate Highly Cited Publications

Science and engineering (S&E) research has traditionally been presented in peer-reviewed S&E journals, books, and conference proceedings, and this publication output can be used as an indicator of scientific activity. New data show that S&E publication output has continued to grow, reaching 2.3 million globally in 2014. This reflects a worldwide average annual growth rate of 6% between 2004 and 2014. The United States and China were the two largest producers of scientific publications in 2014 (19% and 17% of the world total). Data were tabulated by the National Center for Science and Engineering Statistics.
