Epidemiology and socio-demographic risk factors of self-immolation: A systematic review and meta-analysis

Suicide, as a self-harming behavior, is an important cause of death around the world [1]. It was the 15th leading cause of death for all ages (1.4% of all deaths) worldwide in 2012, accounting for over 800,000 estimated deaths [2]. The age standardized rate of suicide was 11.4 per 100,000 and 80% of global suicide occurs in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) [3]. There are several methods of committing suicide, including poisoning, hanging, drug or alcohol overdose, gun shot, exsanguination, jumping, suffocation and carbon monoxide inhalation.
