Not so pretty after all: New pestivirus that attacks the nervous system of Austrian pigs

(University of Veterinary Medicine -- Vienna) Shaking piglets show symptoms similar to classical swine fever, with extensive damage to the brain and the spinal cord. Viral origin of the disease was clarified only recently after discovering an atypical porcine pestivirus. Researchers at Vetmeduni Vienna now discovered a further new virus in Austrian shaking piglets. The pathogen, named LINDA-Virus (Lateral shaking Inducing NeuroDegenerative Agent), is related to Bungowannah virus and more distantly to classical swine fewer virus.
