The armadillo factor: lepromatous leprosy
Travelers, whether they are temporary visitors or immigrants, can bring along an infection that ’s endemic to the home turf. A 31-year-old Hispanic man, currently a prison inmate, presented with a 6-month history of fatigue, night sweats, weight loss, and malaise. At a prior facility, he was diagnosed with anemia and underwent esophagogastroduodenoscopy and colonoscopy. Both were negative fo r gastrointestinal bleeding. The patient also complained of chronic nasal discharge and had seen an otolaryngologist, who identified nasal septal ulceration and scarring.
