Bone loss with antiepileptic drug therapy: a twin and sibling study

ConclusionsAED users had reduced aBMD at the hip regions. Prolonged users and EIAED users had greater aBMD loss, predicting a higher risk of bone fragility. Further prospective studies of AED effects on bone microarchitecture are needed.

Conclusion Although the BMD levels were the same, regardless of the presence or absence of FLD, elderly participants with FLD showed decreased bone formation and increased bone resorption, with sex differences. Because our results suggest that FLD in elderly individuals is detrimental for bone metabolism, and that it leads to bone loss and osteoporosis, further studies using a cohort population are warranted. ConclusionsThe present study shows that the trabecular bone score is negatively associated with marrow adipose tissue, insulin resistance, visceral adipose tissue and intrahepatic lipid measurements. Additionally, there was a negative relationship between saturated lipids in marrow adipose tissue and the trabecular bone score. These results encourage further studies to investigate the role of the trabecular bone score exam in the clinical evaluation of osteoporosis in conditions of insulin resistance.

Authors: Cai WL, Zeng W, Zhu BY, Liu HH, Liu JL Abstract OBJECTIVE: To study the influence of micro ribonucleic acid (miR)-137 on osteoporosis rats by regulating runt-related transcription factor 2 (RUNX2). MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 36 Sprague-Dawley rats were randomly assigned to the normal group (n=12), model group (n=12), and inhibitor group (n=12). No treatment was performed in the normal group. The osteoporosis model in rats was prepared in the model group, and miR-137 inhibitor was administered in osteoporosis rats of inhibitor group. Following 12 weeks of intervention, sampling was conducted. The...

ConclusionVF was seen in more than two-thirds of the postmenopausal women referred for osteoporosis evaluation. VFA identified additional patients with VF whose BMD was not in the osteoporotic range. Incorporation of VFA to BMD will assist in documenting prevalent vertebral fracture which is an independent risk factor for incident fragility fracture irrespective of the BMD.

AbstractPurpose of ReviewThis review updates readers on recent developments in the assessment of cortical bone fragility in vivo. The review explains the clinical need that motivated the development of Cortical Bone Mechanics Technology ™ (CBMT) as a scientific instrument, its unique capabilities, and its necessary further development as a medical device.Recent FindingsClinical experience with dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry has led to calls for new clinical methods for assessing bone health. CBMT is a noninvasive, dynamic 3-point bending test that makes direct, functional measurements of the mechanical properties o...

Osteoporosis is a silent disease characterized by a low bone mineral density (BMD), which is associated with a deterioration of bone microarchitecture. Accordingly, patients with osteoporosis have a higher fracture risk compared to the general population (1). The diagnosis of osteoporosis is usually established using a bone density scan (DEXA). The world health organization (WHO) defines osteoporosis as a - 2.5 standard deviation compared to the mean of a healthy young population (1,2). BMD varies with age and gender, as well as with life habits such as physical activity (3,4) and nutrition (5).

ConclusionIn this study, we explored various machine learning algorithms for the prediction of BMD using simple spine X-ray image features extracted by three deep learning algorithms. We identified the combination for the best performance in predicting high-risk populations with abnormal BMD.

AbstractObjectivesTo investigate whether a deep learning model can predict the bone mineral density (BMD) of lumbar vertebrae from unenhanced abdominal computed tomography (CT) images.MethodsIn this Institutional Review Board –approved retrospective study, patients who received both unenhanced CT examinations and dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) of the lumbar vertebrae, in two institutions (1 and 2), were included. Supervised deep learning was employed to obtain a convolutional neural network (CNN) model using ax ial CT images, including the lumbar vertebrae as input data and BMD values obtained with DXA as ref...

a FJA Abstract BACKGROUND: Osteoporosis has scarcely been prospectively investigated in short-bowel syndrome (SBS). This prospective study was designed to evaluate incretins, adipokines, bone mass, and lipid deposits from marrow adipose tissue (MAT), visceral adipose tissue (VAT), subcutaneous adipose tissue (SAT), and liver (IHLs). METHODS: The study comprised 2 groups matched by gender, height, and age: the control group (CG) (9 males, 9 females) and the SBS group (SBSG) (6 males, 5 females). The SBSG was evaluated twice in an interval of 1 year (SBSG0 and SBSG1 ). The biochemical evaluation included incret...

Abstract BACKGROUND: The concurrent presence of sarcopenia and osteoporosis may enhance fracture risk. AIM: To evaluate the association between sarcopenia, osteoporosis, or the concurrent presence of both the conditions (osteosarcopenia) and the burden (number and severity) of vertebral fractures in women with hip fracture. DESIGN: Cross-sectional study. POPULATION: We studied 350 women with subacute hip fracture. METHODS: Lateral radiographs of the spine were taken 18.2±4.5 days after fracture occurrence and the spine deformity index (SDI) was calculated. Body composition was assessed b...
