7 Feminist Groups On What Trumpcare Could Mean For Women

On Thursday, the House narrowly passed the American Health Care Act aka Trumpcare ― and women around the country are readying themselves for the consequences.   The legislation would effectively allow states to discriminate against women. Under the AHCA, states are allowed to waive the former Obamacare requirement that insurers cover people with pre-existing conditions. Anything from being a survivor of sexual or domestic violence, to having had a C-section or suffered from postpartum depression could now constitute as a pre-existing condition. This means that if you’re deemed to have one of these pre-existing conditions, your insurance company could charge you more. Under Trumpcare, Planned Parenthood would be temporarily defunded by banning Medicaid from being used as insurance at the women’s health centers, and maternity care would effectively be eliminated from required insurance coverage. Directly after the legislation passed, many Americans were devastated: some joined in on the HuffPost Twitter hashtag #IAmAPreexistingCondition; others made the eery correlation between our current predicament and the dystopian future presented in the “The Handmaid’s Tale.”  Women’s rights organizations from around the country sent out some strongly worded press releases that illustrate just how bad this bill could be for women.
