Make Your Business More Profitable: Invest in Addiction Treatment If you own or operate a business with more than ten employees, the odds are that at least one of those workers has a substance abuse problem. Bloomberg News reports that: 3 million Americans admit to using prescription painkillers for non-medical purposes; Overdose is a leading cause of death in the USA; Opioid abuse costs employers $12 billion a year; At any given time, at least 10% of American workers are intoxicated at work. These are startling figures, particularly as employers recognize that employees who are under the influence not only underperform and have greater absenteeism than their counterparts, but they also risk injuring themselves or others on the job. Substance abuse among American workers is a significant problem. Simply firing employees who have a substance abuse problem isn’t always the best solution. It takes considerable time and effort to recruit and train individuals to work in our companies. At the higher levels of management or research, employees may have great skill that is not easily replaced or trade secrets that would be damaging to companies if lost.
