Peripheral Artery Disease in Patients With Ischemic Stroke: A Cross Sectional Observational Study (P3.097)

Objective: To determine the frequency of atherosclerosis by ankle brachial index in patients with an ischaemic stroke and association of carotid artery stenosis and ABI.Design:Cross-sectionalSetting: Neurology section, Department of medicine,Karachi Medical & Dental College.MATERIAL AND METHODSPatients of 15 years or above and of both sexes.Inclusion Criteria: All patients with ischaemic stroke.Exclusion Criteria:Patients with an intracranial bleed or a sub-arachnoid haemorrhage end stage renal disease. All patients included underwent history examination, urea, creatinine, electrolytes (to exclude end stage renal disease), electrocardiogram, and computed tomography of brain without contrast, Carotid Doppler ultrasound, and ABIABI values of < 0.9 were defined as low. outcome measures:Primary:Carotid artery stenosisAnkle brachial indexSecondary:Age, Sex, BMI, Waist circumferenceResults: A total of 200 patients were enrolled. The mean age was 57.53 + 12.23 years. The male female ratio was 1:1. ABI of less than 0.9 were found in 34 (17%)Patients having PAD 19 (55.9%) were males. Out of 34 patients having PAD 6(17.6%)were less than 40 years, 14(41.2%) we're between 40-60 and more than 60 years in each group. A total of 34 patients having PAD 4 had normal BMI, 21were overweight and 9 we're obese. In a total of 100 females 54 (54%) had a waist circumference of > 80 cms in which only 9(16.7%) had PAD. 24 (24%) males had > 90 cms, only 3(12.5%)had PAD.CAS was divided into ...
