Dissecting out the taxonomic heterogeneity within Propionibacterium acnes and proposal for two novel subspecies of the species
Propionibacterium acnes is one of the dominant commensals on the human skin and also an opportunistic pathogen of acne vulgaris, sarcoidosis, prostate cancer, and various infections. Recent investigations using housekeeping genes revealed that the species consists of three subtypes, types I, II, and III. There are growing evidence that these subtypes have distinct morphological, genomic, proteomic, and pathogenic characteristics, including type I releasing a key inflammatory protein related to acne pathogenesis.
