Model Continuums of Care Initiative (MCCI) for Women and Girls at Risk and Living With HIV/AIDS and Harmful Alcohol and Associated Comorbidities Planning Cooperative Agreement (U34)

Funding Opportunity RFA-AA-17-013 from the NIH Guide for Grants and Contracts. The purpose of the Model Continuums of Care Initiative (MCCI) for Women and Girls at Risk and Living with HIV/AIDS and Harmful Alcohol and Associated Comorbidities Initiative is to promote the development and evaluation of integrated multilevel interventions to reduce alcohol consumption as a key approach to preventing new infections and enhancing treatment adherence in communities in the U.S. where racial and ethnic minority women bear a disproportionate share of the HIV/AIDS disease burden. Using the U34 Planning Cooperative Agreement mechanism and a community-based participatory research approach, MCCI will support implementation and operations research to: 1) Improve screening and early engagement in care; 2) Enhance retention in care; 3) Improve medication adherence; and 4) Address the role of alcohol in the adoption of female-controlled HIV prevention strategies as they become available for implementation (i.e., microbicides, PrEP). Results of this research will provide the evidence base for the development of more effective systems of care for women and girls at risk and living with HIV, including pregnant mothers who engage in risky drinking and other substance use.
