[Newsdesk] Infectious disease surveillance update

On Aug 11, 2016, more than 2 years since the last reported case of polio in Nigeria, the government reported cases of two children from Borno state in northern Nigeria who were paralysed with the disease. Genetic sequencing of the virus determined that the new cases are linked to the wild strain circulating in Borno in 2011, suggesting that low-level transmission of the virus has been ongoing without detection. This suggestion is unsurprising against the backdrop of a long-term and worsening humanitarian crisis in the region, making large areas hard to reach for vaccination teams.
