Chronic and bedtime use of benztropine with antipsychotics: Is it necessary?

The cholinergic system plays an important role in the quality of life and physical health. Anticholinergic drugs cause adverse effects such as dry mouth, constipation, blurry vision, and even acute angle closure glaucoma. Benztropine (Cogentin) is an anticholinergic drug used to treat acute extrapyramidal symptoms (EPS) caused by antipsychotics. Benztropine is also a dopamine reuptake inhibitor, which makes it useful for people with EPS who are on antipsychotics. EPS includes various involuntary muscle movement disorders such as dystonia, bradykinesia, pseudoparkinsonism, and dyskinesia.
