Olfactory subtypes in Parkinson ’s disease, and their longitudinal significance

Background: Patients with Parkinson ’s disease suffer from hyposmia, even before its diagnosis. The olfactory route has been recognized to provide a path for pathobiologic development. Previous studies focused on the dichotomy of olfactory status as hyposmia or not, neglecting subpopulation of PD with normal or delayed impairment of olfaction after the diagnosis. Its longitudinal significance on disease progression was also not investigated. The study investigated the olfactory subtypes and their influence on cognition in PD.
