18. Rapid Modulation of Subcallosal Cingulate Activity and Depression Using Ultrasonic Arrays
Excessive activity of the subcallosal cingulate (SCC) has been linked to depression. Direct and selective engagement of deep brain regions like the SCC is currently only possible with invasive surgical approaches. We have addressed this limitation by creating a new, non-significant-risk, MRI-compatible device that uses two opposing ultrasonic arrays to measure and accurately compensate for attenuation and distortion caused by the head, enabling precise delivery of ultrasound to deep brain regions at known intensity.
