Altered Microbial Transcription in Long-term Proton Pump Inhibitor Use: Findings From a United States Cohort Study
Proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) are commonly prescribed to reduce gastric hydrochloric acid to treat disorders related to acid exposure, including gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) and peptic ulcer disease.1 Although PPIs are often prescribed for long-term use and generally considered safe, their functional impact on the gut microbiome, which may have implications for long-term health, is not fully understood. Their mechanism of action may exert evolutionary pressure on gut microbial communities through altered host immunity, increased gastric pH, and disruption of the gastric acid barrier.
