Nurse Practitioners Are Doing Their Part in Substance Use Disorder Care

The focus on opioid overdose death rates has national attention and they continue to increase despite better management of prescription opioid use.1 Nurse Practitioners in many settings, but especially in primary care, have expanded their practices to include both acute and chronic pain management, and more recently have expanded their skill set to include comprehensive substance use disorder care (SUD). To achieve this, NPs have modified their clinical practices and have engaged with continuing education (CE) programs that are focused on nationally vetted practice guidelines published by the Center for Disease Control (CDC).
