The Potential of Genomics and Electronic Health Records to Invigorate Drug Development
Genetic association studies of chronic pain and psychiatric disorders have identified many DNA variants but so far have not led to new biomarkers, treatments, or improved outcomes. In part, this reflects the challenge of confidently mapping genetic variants to their causal genes. In the current issue of Biological Psychiatry, Johnston et al. (1) report a transcriptome-wide association study (TWAS) and a phenome-wide association study examining the association between a disease trait (chronic multisite pain) and gene expression, matching potential drug therapies to those perturbations.
