Pubertal Development in Adolescents: It's all About Timing

Recent years have seen much interest in puberty: its onset and variation, environmental and other triggers, and those situations where clinicians might choose to block its onset (e.g., sexual precocity, gender dysphoria, etc.). This month's edition of the Journal of Adolescent Health (JAH) includes not one but five articles that highlight findings from well-designed clinical studies, each examining a unique dimension of pubertal development. Two of the articles document pubertal characteristics in a population-based cohort [1,2], two examine the emotional and behavioral impact of early puberty [3,4], and a final article examines the impact of exposure to poverty as an early life stressor that may influence pubertal onset [5].
