Participation in a residency matching program is an annual rite of passage for thousands of graduating senior medical students in the United States, and for numerous other medical professionals seeking postgraduate medical training. The process was centralized decades ago in an effort to improve fairness for candidates, maximize opportunities for programs to recruit their top choices from among their applicants, and streamline the logistical process. As a medical educator working directly with both medical students and urology residents, it has been fascinating to watch this process evolve over time.
