Taking the Wheel

2024 marks my 37th year as a nurse practitioner (NP) —longer than either marriage, older than my first-born child, and lengthier than all but a handful of friendships. Leaving my coveted public health job for full-time graduate school was a wager that paid off like a winning lottery ticket. In mid-1980s North Carolina, NPs were limited-edition model s with custom features and a high-performance engine. Graduation was my on-ramp to an opportunity superhighway with stretches of autobahn-like speed.
