Obesity and Heart Failure: A New Era Begins

More than half of patients with heart failure (HF) have preserved left ventricular ejection fractions (HFpEFs), and roughly two-thirds of those individuals are living with obesity.1 Initially considered to be a bystander, it is now clear that obesity plays a pivotal causal role in HFpEF. The amount of excess body fat, particularly visceral fat, is associated with the degree of systemic inflammation, cardiac dysfunction, chamber remodeling, volume overload, blood-volume redistribution, and elevation in cardiac filling pressures.
