The impact of pre-treatment smoking status on survival after chemoradiotherapy for locally advanced non-small-cell lung cancer

The causal relationship between tobacco use and lung cancer has long been known [1,2]. As well as providing conclusive evidence of this link, the British doctors study also clearly identified higher mortality rates for smokers and a survival benefit associated with smoking cessation [3]. This is applicable to the general population and provides the rationale for public health measures to lower smoking rates. However, the impact of smoking status on outcomes after a lung cancer diagnosis is less clearly defined.
