Bleeding disorders of unknown cause; the role of physiological anticoagulants

A substantial number of patients that are referred to a hematologist for investigation of a bleeding tendency are eventually classified as having bleeding disorder of unknown cause (BDUC). A large BDUC cohort was described by Quiroga et al. in 2007 [1], and then in 2018 Gebhart et al. showed that 73  % of patients in the Vienna Bleeding Biobank, a study setup to systematically evaluate consecutive patients referred to the clinic with bleeding symptoms, have been diagnosed with BDUC [2]. This is in line with other studies indicating that BDUC is diagnosed with increasing frequency over recent years [3,4].
