Reconsidering high intensity zones: its role in intervertebral disk degeneration and low back pain

ConclusionsHIZ was prevalent in 41.9% of participants that were recruited in this study. Nucleus degeneration, disk bulge/protrusion and increased IVD angle were found to be independently associated with HIZ and since there is an increased likelihood of LBP, we posit that HIZ is likely a symptomatic and clinically meaningful diagnostic tool in the assessment of LBP.
