Commentary Regarding: Using Consumer Wearable Devices to Profile Postoperative Complications After Pediatric Appendectomy

This past week, I had the dubious honor of being a patient in the emergency room. Hoping to avoid (or at least defer) seeking medical care, I was finally convinced that my symptoms were not solely attributable to the fatigue of being on call for a week when I looked at my Apple Watch. My resting heart rate, normally in the low 40 s, rose to the 50 s, then 60 s, then to 72. I thought back to my internship, when often the first sign that a patient was becoming septic was an increase in respiratory or cardiac rate.
